COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Course
Description
|
|
This course presents Western Civilizations, covering topics such
as the Post-Napoleonic Europe, the Industrial Revolution,
Imperialism, World War I, the Rise of Communism and Fascism, World
War II and the Cold War.
The
course will consist of lecture and discussion sections.
Effective learning includes not just taking notes, but thinking
about and discussing the material as well. All students
are encouraged to participate in class discussions.

Objectives
|
|
Students will be able to identify, understand and discuss
important themes, terms, people, and events in Western
Civilization from the Industrial Revolution to the present.
Student will
also be able to demonstrate specific learning outcomes for this
course.

Examinations
|
There
will be three (3)
non-cumulative exams consisting of multiple-choice questions,
each worth 20% of your final grade. Students will be responsible for ALL
of the material covered in the lectures AND
the text. Exam dates will be announced in class.
|
|
Documents
|
| Throughout
the semester, all student will examine, discuss and evaluate
primary source documents covering the course time period.
Students will then answer various questions by themselves, and
then in groups. The document assignments will be worth 20% of your
final grade. The documents due dates will be announced in class.
|
|
Quizzes
|
| There
will be seven quizzes during the semester, but two of your
lowest scores will be dropped. Quiz questions will be taken from
the lecture notes and assigned weekly readings. All quizzes will
be unannounced and worth the remaining 20% of your course grade.
|
|
Attendance
|
Attendance
will be taken at the beginning of class each day. Students that
arrive after the roll has been taken will be considered absent
unless they have a valid excuse. The following absences will be
considered valid: illness requiring medical care, religious
holidays of all faiths, required college activities, death in
the family, or such other emergencies. The instructor reserves
the right to decide what constitutes such an emergency. Students
with perfect attendance will receive three percentage bonus
points added to their final grade. Students who leave before
class before it ends, without permission from the instructor, will be marked
absent.

Makeup
Exams
|
Students
will be required to notify the instructor via email if they will
be unable to take an exam. Students must have a
valid excuse in order to take them. All makeup exams will consist of
essay questions and must be completed during the last week of
class. FAILURE TO COMPLETE MAKEUP EXAMS WILL
RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE IN THIS COURSE.

Academic
Dishonesty
|
Violations
of the academic honor code such as cheating, copying or
plagiarism will not be tolerated. STUDENTS WHO VIOLATE THE
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY WILL RECEIVE A FAILING GRADE, A ZERO,
ON THAT ASSIGNMENT/EXAM. All students are required to
read the Standard of Student Conduct in the current Student
Calendar/Handbook.

Class
Conduct
|
Students
will be required to conduct themselves in a professional manner
in all classes. The following behavior will not be tolerated:
sleeping, excessive talking, and arriving late for class.
Please turn off your cell phones and pagers before class begins. Violations of the class conduct policy will result in your
removal from class.

Students
with Disabilities
|
All
Students with disabilities, registered with IRCC, should meet
with the instructor at the beginning of the semester and
indicate the special accommodations you require.

Withdrawal
Deadline
|
The last day to withdraw from this class with a “W” is Friday
March 28, 2008.
Instructor withdrawals will NOT be
given due to poor academic performance or poor attendance.
|
